Converting the Critic - My Husband

November 27, 2013

Hi all,

I love blogging and running my YouTube channel - to hear from viewers/readers that they like my post/video and that they are going to try out my idea makes me swell with pride.

However, I am starting from such a more powerful position with 'strangers'. You have looked up my videos/blog because you have similar interests and ethics to me - you are looking for something new to try.

So, nothing feels better than when a friend or family member tries out something I suggest and likes it.

Hang on, that's not actually true... the only other thing I find more satisfying than converting my friends and family... is converting my husband!

I started really focusing on all my 'hippy' stuff (as my husband calls it) earlier this year although I think I had always subconsciously stayed away from too many chemicals for a number of years as it just instinctively felt wrong- even without doing any research.

In the early months of this year I would chat excitedly away at Hubby and say, 'you should try this' or 'you should try that' and my enthusiasm would be met with (at best) a polite 'mm-hmm' or (at worst) an eye roll.

Nowadays Hubby is much more likely to get on board. I recently suggested he try the Crystal Deodorant and to my surprise... he actually gave it a go! And to his surprise he is now converted! No more chocking on the toxic fumes of his aerosol - which I used to make him use by an open window!

He was VERY reluctant about oils to start off with. He didn't want to use coconut oil as a moisturiser because he thought it would give him spots. I managed to convince him to give it a try and he hasn't looked back since!

Hubby is also doing his bit to spread the 'no chemicals' message and he often suggests coconut oil as a moisturiser if anyone he knows complains of dry skin. I hear that most girls (and one guy) in his office are now avid oil users too! Brilliant news!

He has also (finally) agreed to go along with the SLS ban I have been trying to impose. I don't buy (I am phasing out) any products that contain SLS and I don't let them near my daughter at all. Hubby has 'not that bothered' but he is willing to try out some DIY body wash and hand wash... as long as it isn't more expensive!

Are you in the process of getting rid of chemicals from your skin care? How did you find it? Are there any 'communal' products that you have to share with house mates/partner/parents/etc that you wish you could change?

Rach xx

  1. What a great post! I am convincing my boyfriend to try natural products after an allergic reaction to a chemical filled shower gel! I gave him a facial using a lovely facial oil and he approved so I'm getting there...might have to buy him a few things for Christmas to get him started! xx

  2. My husband is fairly easy going but I have noticed that his skincare products have made a turn in the 'green' direction without too much of a push from me over the last year. I love it when I hear him suggest things to his work colleagues and friends. x

    1. You're lucky! My hubby used to think it was all hippy rubbish at first and he's finally coming round now ;-) He's always been happy for me to keep chemicals away from our little girl tho, he's never complained about that at all so he must know deep down that it's the best thing to do. xx

  3. I know the feeling trying to convince others to give natural products a try. My fiancé is gradually coming around and he's switched his soap, shower gel and toothpaste so far. Next step is deodorant, but he won't go down without a fight on that one haha!

  5. Brilliant post! The people in my household aren't fussed either way, but if it feels/looks/tastes nice enough, they'll go along with it. :) x

My boyfriend thinks it's ridiculous that I wash my face with honey and that I'm taking away from all the people who want to eat it, causing a major honey shortage! :\
