Avril Cosmetics Haul and Review

March 07, 2014

Today I wanted to put the spotlight on Avril cosmetics, a very affordable French brand.

I purchased mine from: www.mondebio.co.uk and paid reasonable shipping costs and no taxes as within the EU.

Avril Nail Polish - base + top coat, French Rose, French White, Grey, Lichen - 7ml

I like these polishes and would buy them again as they are so reasonably priced. At just £2.66 each they really are very affordable - just don't expect much from them and you won't be disappointed!

The darker colours needed three thick coats and the pink is very sheer but it is ideal for my needs as I can use it with the white as a 'french manicure' polish. Just don't buy the colours expecting them to be very opaque unless they are the darker shades.

They were as long lasting as any other nail polish - just one day on my nails (without top coat for a fair comparison) but that is how long any polish I have ever tried before.

Avril Lipstick - Pataya

This is a pretty colour, I wasn't keen to start off with but it has grown on me. The formula is okay, not overly drying but not as good as some others I own (i.e. Lily Lolo). This was £6.56 which isn't massively cheap but doesn't break the bank either. I'd rather pay a couple more pounds and get another Lily Lolo colour I think! Don't get me wrong, there is nothing really bad about this lipstick but there isn't anything amazing about it.

Avril Eyeliner - Burnt Umber (Brown)

I've been after a brown eye liner for a few months now, I stupidly missed out on the Lily Lolo one in their sale, I waited too long. I quite often prefer a brown liner over a black one for a softer day time look.

This one was only £2.91 so I jumped at it. Again, this is reasonable but it's not great. For under £3 it is fine, I don't think I would buy it again. It's not awful, I am happy to continue using it until I am due to replace it (3-6 months for hygiene reasons) but then I want a softer one that goes on easier... like... yep, you guessed it... my Lily Lolo one!! Haha!

Final Thoughts

Overall, I am a little bit disappointed with this brand. I thought I had found a great, affordable brand that I could fall in love with but unfortunately the quality does reflect the price. Out of the three types of product I bought I would only repurchase the nail varnishes but that is mainly due to the fact that I rarely wear nail polish so I don't want to spend much.

Have you tried Avril? Have you had a better experience or found the same?

    1. I have indeed, I love their liquid eyeliner, I'm not too fussed about their mascaras (they are not bad, they don't flake or smudge but they don't really add any real volume or drama either) I like their lipstick colours but my fussy, dry lips aren't overly keen on the formula (it's not bad but I have to use extra lip balm) and I've also tried their concealer- it has a lovely creamy texture but I'm not sure it is that effective - I prefer the Beauty Without Cruelty creamy concealer personally. Do you have any favourites?? :-)

  2. I had three Avril items in a limited edition SoukSouk box, the mascara, nail polish and eyelash curler. The mascara is actually really good, especially considering the price. It's very volumising and buildable, although recently I've started noticing a little bit of flaking. The nail polish looks nice but doesn't last too long without chipping. The eyelash curler didn't work for me at all. Agree that the price probably reflects the quality! xx

    1. Good to know about the mascara, I think I would have bought that if they had that on the site I purchased the rest from as I am on the hunt for an affordable mascara - but I seem to remember they didn't have it (I may well be wrong). Rach xx

  3. I'm the same as Julia, I had a few Avril products in my SoukSouk box. I had a really lovely taupe nail polish which, like you, I had to apply a couple of coats but I really like the shade. I'm also going to agree with Julia in that I really like the mascara! In fact, I had one in my SoukSouk box and one in a blogger swap and I'm just coming to the end of my second. I'd buy again, for sure. x

  4. Aww everything seems a but meh, I haven't tried anything yet as I'm wanting to get a little more clued up first but I defo think ill avoid this range, such a shame I find my polishes last at least a week! Without top coat minimal chipping, it'd do my head in to layer and layer hey at least they weren't super expensive though ... X

    1. yeah you're doing the right thing - feel everything out and if you do buy anything get samples! Loads of sites do samples, beautifully organic do full size samples of Zao Organics which is a great way to try out some nice products. Also, a lot of american sites are defo worth a visit - the all natural face is amazing and I can't wait to get something from silk naturals. Brija is great to (did a review the other day) I think something that all of us green bloggers said in the going green tag is that we wish we hadn't rushed, you're in a great position now to take your time and do it right, do it gradually. :-) xx

  5. I had the mascara from this brand. It's ok, but I've had better and probably would use a different brand when I buy a new one soon. Thanks for reviewing the rest of the brand and giving us the heads up :-) xx

  6. I love the mascara from Avril but I probably won't repurchase because it's cheap but then once you add on shipping it starts to get expensive and I don't really want to try anything else from them. I have a brown nail polish which is a nice colour but a pink one I have needs about 4 coats to even be slightly opaque!
