Three ways with a Banana (DIY)

April 23, 2014

I wanted to run this series of 'three ways with' because so many of the 'things' I use are multi-functional. The first in the series was 'Three Ways with Green Tea' which I really enjoyed - I hope you guys did too!

This week I wanted to tell you three great ways with the humble banana. You can read on or you can watch *my video* if you prefer.

Eat it:

Okay this is a pretty obvious thing to do with a banana and I'm sure you are all aware that bananas are good for you but did you know:

  • Great source of slow release energy
  • They can make you feel HAPPY as they contain high levels of tryptophan which is converted into serotonin which is the 'feel good' chemical.
  • Regulates your blood sugar levels (which could help fight PMT symptoms)
  • Banana's aid digestion
  • Can help combat both diarrhoea and constipation.
  • Provide relief from indigestion and heart burn
Side note: My little lady had a few too many Easter eggs at the weekend and she actually got heartburn! I felt awful (bad mummy) but I did know an awesome natural remedy - after eating about half a banana and sitting/staying upright for about 10 minutes she was fine again! Phew!

Face mask:

My all time favourite banana face mask is a super moisturising one that also stops spots in their tracks! It is a bit miraculous how well it works.

Simply mash less than half a ripe banana, stir in a tea spoon of honey and (if you don't have sensitive skin) add a small amount of cinnamon. Apply to your face and neck, leave for about 10-15 minutes then wash off. It leaves your skin so soft and refreshed, beating those blemishes too.

I've featured it before so *click here* to watch a video all about it.

Teeth Whitening

Yup, you read that correctly, I am going to tell you how to whiten your teeth with a banana... well actually with the skin.

I used to use whitening products like Crest 3D strips but now I dread to think what concoction of chemicals were in them... and I used them in my mouth! Never again.

Having said that it is still important to me that I have white teeth. I had a brace when I was younger and I'll be damned if I went through all that trouble to then let my teeth look yellow and dull.

Nowadays I use a much more natural method. I take a banana peel and rub the inside of it against my teeth. A bit of mush comes off and that's not very pleasant if I'm honest but it's hardly the end of the world.

In the interest of full disclosure I do feel the need to say that I don't smoke, don't drink red wine, tea or coffee, etc so I probably wouldn't suffer too much from yellowing teeth but I do notice a difference when I use banana peel. The first time I did it I asked hubby if he could see the difference or was it all in my head? He was suitably impressed at the improvement so it must work! Enough for me to back and do it another three times since and then suggest it to you guys!

As with many natural 'remedies' there is no scientific proof that it works although a ripe banana (and therefore the inside of it's skin) contains a high amount of potassium, magnesium and manganese. When applied to yellowed, stained teeth these minerals will be absorbed and promote whitening.

Remember - banana is high in (natural) sugar so you want to make sure you brush your teeth afterwards and don't do this too often - maybe once or twice a week to start you off then once a month for maintenance.

There are so many other great ways to use a banana including hair treatments and so on but I think these are the three most accessible, effective ways hopefully you've found this post useful and can give some of the stuff a try.

Thanks so much for reading,
