Whipped Vanilla Body Butter - DIY Dupe

June 11, 2014

This is going to be the first in a new series - DIY Dupes. You can watch my video here.

I have a few products that I LOVE but they are a bit expensive for me to regularly purchase so I need to find an effective DIY alternative... which I will then share with you.

I want to always give a big shout out to the products that inspire the DIYs - I would 100% buy the originals if I could afford them. They are normally more expensive for a good reason - they are often hand made and always feature the best quality ingredients and are very effective products. Also, I want to mention them on here in the hopes that those who are not interested in a DIY idea can buy the actual, brilliant, original product.

This week's 'DIY Dupe' is inspired by the DELICIOUS Peppy Galore Whipped Vanilla Mousse. It is by far the best body butter I have ever tried, the scent, the texture, the moisturising effect without being greasy, it's all on point and SO perfect. It's just the price tag - £15 (plus P&P) is more than I can justify. I'm not saying it's not worth it - the ingredients are clearly high quality and every one is handmade, it's just more than I can afford/justify on a regular basis.

I was very lucky, I received this in my Christmas swap from Amber of Amber's Beauty Talk so I have her to thank for my love of this product! (She also sent me my first ever Lily Lolo lipstick... she has a lot to answer for!)

P.S. Look at my early photo's! I hope they have got better over the last 7 months!
Peppy Galore is a great brand - you should check them out. I love their body mousse and their hand cream, both smell good enough to eat and work amazingly.

Onto the DIY... it's a bit of a commitment.. you'll see...

So, about 6-8 weeks before you want to make the mousse you will need to start infusing your oil:

  • Take 2 vanilla pods and about a cup of (ideally organic) sunflower oil.
  • Chop the pods into small sections and split them down the middle to release the smell and oils.
  • Pop the chopped up pods into the oil and leave to infuse for at least six week.
  • It is important that you store the 'mixture' in a cool, dark, dry place and you shake/stir it regularly.
When you have your vanilla infused sunflower oil ready to go the next bit is nice and easy.

Place a small amount of water in a pan and put it on a low heat. Add a bowl or jug to create a double boiler.

  • Put half a cup of Mango butter into the bowl
  • Add one cup of Shea butter
  • Grate or slice some Cacoa butter and add half a cup into the mixture

Allow this to melt and mix together, stirring every so often

Once fully melted you can add your oils:

  • 2 Tablespoon of vanilla infused sunflower oil
  • 1/2 Tablespoon of avocado oil
  • Few drops of Vitamin E Oil (optional, good for preservation)

Mix well

Personally (and to stay true to the Peppy Galore inspiration) I don't like adding essential oils but if you want to add them, now is the time.

Use a towel/oven glove to remove the jug/bowl from the double boiler and pour the mixture into a new bowl and put in the fridge.

First time you'll want to leave it for 20-30 minutes and then check back on it every 10 minutes after that until it is thick and nearly set but not solid. You don't want it to move if you move the bowl but you want it to still be soft to the touch.

Start whipping - an electric whisk is ideal for this otherwise you will be there for hours! You should see the mixture go from a light yellow to a white colour and become thicker.

If you are happy with the soft, whipped consistency then you can stop here and put it into containers. Personally I wanted it to be a thicker, more solid mousse consistency like Peppy Galore so I put mine back in the fridge for 5 minutes, whipped it again, put it back in the fridge and whipped it one last time until it started to change consistency again - like over whipped cream.

You are all done now! This will melt upon contact with the skin and it will leave you feeling very moisturised without being greasy.

If you want to give this as a gift (or generally make it look pretty) then you can add some labels and bows to complete the look.

VoilĂ ! A beautiful, moisturising body mousse made by your own fair hands. This is lovely to use yourself or to give as a gift... I like to do both!

As I said, the original product that inspired this DIY is beautiful so stop by the Peppy Galore website if you want to check it out for yourself, I highly recommend it.

  1. Hehehehe naughty me!! I'm glad you love it as much as I do! They're actually not making it at the minute because they can't get the vanilla or something - I remember seeing in their newsletter so this has come round at a great time!
